But he then said after how well it would work on the phone, they put the tablet project on the shelf and focused on the phone as it was more important. Which means it was a tablet and no just a touch screen device in the beginning.

Sure, it could've been a full tablet. It just didn't have iOS, is my point.

People misremember a lot. You know how it goes: a story always gets better as time goes by :)

For example, in the later tablet version we are told that seeing kinetic scrolling on the demo made him want for Apple to build a touch phone:

“I had this idea about having a glass display, a multitouch display you could type on with your fingers. I asked our folks: could we come up with a multitouch display that we could type on? And six months later, they came back with this prototype display. And I gave it to one of our really brilliant UI guys and he called me back a few weeks later and had intertial scrolling working and I thought, ‘my God, we can build a phone with this!’ So we put the tablet on the shelf… and we went to work on the iPhone.”

Yet, years before in one of the first iPhone articles in we were told that kinetic scrolling came later on:

"At one point, Mr. Jobs got a call from one of the iPhone engineers with an idea: Why not allow iPhone users to navigate through both song collections and contacts stored on the device by simply flicking their fingers up and down across the surface of the touch-screen? The engineer gave Mr. Jobs a demonstration of the technology, and the Apple chief executive signed off on it immediately, according to a person familiar with the process."

I'd love one day for a definitive history to come out, so we can know the full timing, and also credit those unsung engineers who actually invented it all.

There has been a lot of speculation that PIN
numbers were given out as early as 7am that
morning -- well in advance of the 12pm CST
    preorder start.

If you read posts here on Mac Rumors you
will see that claim is substantiated.

Very unhappy with the way Radio Shack ran
    this entire preorder campaign.

Just went to the Radio Shack that's less than a quarter mile from my house and talked with the rep.

All good to pre-order by adding a line of service on the 15th.

Looks like the best spot for me to purchase considering the closeness and the fact that I seriously doubt anyone is going to think to purchase there.

Its located in a tiny strip "mall" (if you even wanna call it that) on the wee edge of town of 15,000.

All thats left to do is get a Visa Prepaid Debit card and put $350-400 on it. That and wait for the 15th to come.

    Live this Moment.

My RS store would not let me leave information.

They are waiting till 1pm EST.

Meanwhile, people are twittering their stores
are issuing pin numbers to them.

    What gives?

Man of man, was Radio Shack the worst outfit
to do this through. Don't totally blame them for
    being handed this crap.

Stores were told any ticket generated before 12CST would be voided.

This is ridiculous. The record companies are obsessed with money. They didnt seek royalties on CD players but iPods are somehow different. They are MUSIC PLAYERS. They record industry should have no part in music hardware, its just ridiculous.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesnt understand why they would want money for every iPod sold. Is this how Microsoft plans to "kill" the iPod with their Zune? By distorting the mp3 market with such kind of BS

A 2.66 Ghz Woodcrest will probably be faster than a 2.93Ghz Conroe. A 1.83Ghz Yonah is faster than a 3.2Ghz Pentium, right?;)I thought the two processors were identical (in a single processor config) except that the Woodcrests have a higher FSB (1066mhz vs. 1333mhz). According to the Anandtech review, the 1333mhz FSB gives you only about 3% boost in speed.

    Core 2 Duo

    2.13 ghz - $224 (2MB L2 cache)
    2.40 ghz - $316
    2.67 ghz - $530

    Xeon 5100 series

    2.00 ghz - $316
    2.33 ghz - $455
    2.66 ghz - $690

It makes more sense to go with a 2.4 ghz Conroe for a single-processor config, since it's cheaper than the 2.33 ghz Woodcrest. What I'd like to see:

    GOOD
    2.40 ghz Core 2 Duo - $1499

    BETTER
    2 x 2.00 ghz Xeon - $1999

    BEST
    2 x 2.67 ghz Xeon - $2799

Of course, if Apple were REALLY ambitious, they should release a mini tower using Conroes and release the Mac Pros in quad-only configs.

I'm not trolling, this is an honest question. But isn't a Final Cut pretty much worthless for commercial use without a way to put the results on Blu-Ray?
    Here are a few examples.

Would you call someone a moderate when he would leave a baby alone in a room to die after the baby had survived an abortion? Most people here already know that I'm against the stimulus and against "gay" rights. As for the stimulus packages, Ford just reported a profit, and that company refused the stimulus money. If a company is going to fail let it do that. Let it take responsibility for its own blunders. Don't let a codependent government rescue it.

You do realize that Bush started that right? As for Ford, their European division saved their butts and the jobs lost would have made the recession a lot worse. Yeah, good idea, let it all fail. Maybe we should let the government fail as well eh? They seem to be having monetary issues now.

Was just trying to price out an IMac on the Apple store and the option of upgrade the keyboard/mouse to a wireless version was gone??

Something new in the offing to be announced tomorrow perhaps??

I think that the option disappeared when the wireless Mighty Mouse came out.

I'm not sure either and I shouldn't have made the assumption. I know Ableton and Cubase do as I've used both and I'm now an avid Ableton user. I'd imagine Logic will take full advantage sometime soon since it's now one of Apple's pro applications. It certainly makes sense considering how bogged down your system gets once you load enough virtual instruments and effects.

I'm a Live user too. I wouldn't assume the forthcoming Live 6 supports more than two cores though.

I agree about Logic and the multi core support. They should have done this for the G5 quads though (I hear the quad owners scream :) ).

Edit: apparently Live 6 supports more than two cores/procs

Sure, but did Samsung patent it?

It's not about 'who copied who?', but 'who copied after who patented?'

All the corporations mentioned in this thread are dinosaurs and know what type of business they are in. If they fail to patent their (good) ideas than it's a given that someone else eventually will. Doesn't matter whether we or anyone thinks that's right or wrong. It's normal business practice. Any corporation thet develops products in a hot contested market like this and doesn't play this game will lose business or cash.

Samsung didn't stole it from Apple since they were first with the design, end of story.

Samsung can claim Apple stole their design and patent it. That's fraud right since it's not their own idea?

Apple could start improving their customer service by:

    - Combining "Pro Care," and ".Mac"
    - Offering online apple care support for .mac members
    - Extending their standard warranty
    - The ability to serve people at the apple store as they walk in (for minor issues). Who in the world came up with this appointment crap?
    - Allowing apple users to subsrcibe to apple learning events in iCal.

Actually, they do. They also got paid on every blank tape sold when cassettes were big. I think it is crazy for everyone to think that the music industry is greedy when it getting squeezed out of all of their revenue streams. So, Apple makes hundreds of millions off of their back on the itunes site, and a billion off of iPod sales, and they cannot share in the wealth?

It doesn't cost the consumer any more, why wouldn't you want the people who actually make the music you are listening to get compensated?

This debate is stale. People want something for nothing.

I work in a related industry...
You're wrong, this is 100% greed. Apple does not make squat off music sales. The artists would get none of the "new iPod money" because it is not in their contracts... just like the blank tape royalties, no artist will see a dime from this.

Why are the big labels failing? They sign artists that suck, and the dozen or so executives at the top are way over paid.

Everything is passed on to the consumer level, you obviously need a business/economics lesson.

Was there any doubt it wouldn't be a lot faster? I mean, I know it was already plenty fast, but come on...

But it's not faster. Slower actually than the G5 at some apps. What's everyone looking at anyway? I'm pretty unimpressed. Other than Adobe's usage of cache (AE is a cache lover and will use all of it, hence the faster performance).

But the actual xeon processors are only as fast as the G5 processors. Look at the average specs... the 2.66 machines are only a teeny bit faster than the G5s except in a few apps like filemaker. But not in the biggies like Final Cut Pro where it actually appears that mhz for mhz the G5 is a faster machine hands down!

The thing is Apple is shooting itself in the foot because it knows that all the Prosumers research enough that they know there is better available. Apple is losing alot of sales by not being prepared. I would think that Apple would get 2nd priority to Dell on shipments so they should have a good stock of C2D.

Where's your proof that Apple is losing a lot of sales by not being prepared?

If everone that ever visited MacRumors got mad and purchased a Dell, that would not be a lot.

Are you just making this up?

I went ahead and bought my MacBook Pro because I can't do my schoolwork without a laptop. So, I'm really not paying much attention these days about future announcements :)

    Is that irony?

I'm also a student, and I don't think I could wait any longer than a month for these long-overdue MacBook Pros to ship... so a possible late November arrival is worrying to say the least.
