Plastic Surgery in the Media Its Effect on Society

In the late 20th century, many celebrities and socialites have decided to go under cosmetic surgery procedures such as Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Michael Jackson. Whether this was pressure from being scrutinized under the public eye or living up to the high standards as role models to a generation, this led to being one of the many factors spurring a huge increase in the traffic for plastic surgery for people of all types.

There are many other factors, inspiring souls to under-go the knife, for the addition of this multi-billionaire dollar industry include a preoccupation with a negative body image, body dysmoprhic disorder, and the media's portrayal of beauty, most notably seen in the early 21st Century.

For the latter factor a large increase in cosmetic surgery awareness was greatly induced by a television show on MTV known as "I want a Famous Face". Where many individuals apply to the MTV network by sending in videos for a chance to win the opportunity of being featured on the MTV Special. These individuals aspired to have similar aesthetic appeal to such celebrity faces including the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Ricky Martin, and Janet Jackson.

This reveals that to a large extent for a media pressure for cosmetic surgery. However there is also much social pressure as well. There are those desiring or deciding in plastic surgery between a large variety of options, including those of the buttocks, thighs, facial, nose, and breasts.

Awful Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery deals with the healing and restoration of health. The patients could be victims of injury, disfigurement or scarring, as a result of trauma, disease or congenital defects. Plastic surgery involves aesthetic or cosmetic surgery to alter or rejuvenate facial and body features, which are not appreciated by the patient.

As the name suggests, plastic surgery that is an indication of surgical errors is called awful plastic surgery. This could also be a result of poor aesthetic choices by either the surgeon or the patient, before surgery. Facial surgery that has errors is easily identified and obvious. The awfulness could be the result of face-lifts that have become too tight. This could cause asymmetry and tightness. Patients of awful plastic surgery at times, lose mobility of facial features and also lose sensation, as a result of damaged nerves.

This botched surgery can usually be easily re-fixed and the problem solved. It is important to know that the repair job on plastic surgery can only be done if there is enough tissue left. It is easy to disguise plastic surgery gone awry, on other parts of the body. The various effects of awful surgery could be excessive scarring, deformation and in some cases, even paralysis. It causes lot of emotional and psychological damage on the patients. Some develop a guilt complex and feel that they deserved the bad surgery, due to their vanity.

Plastic and cosmetic surgery has been practiced by surgeons since 800 BC. A surgery procedure, now known as rhinoplasty, was performed to restore noses of people in India. But Plastic surgery didn't become popular until 20th century when surgeons used this procedure to restore physical deformities caused by war. Cosmetic surgery, a procedure that's reshapes and enhances perfectly normal body is consequential to plastic surgery. The wars caused too much damaged that it increased the innovation of plastic surgery and this gave the window of opportunity for cosmetic to surgery to boom in the industry. The surgeon's realized that aside from fixing deformities, they could also enhance beauty through surgery. They then developed body enhancement techniques such as breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck, in addition to facial surgeries.

It has a broad field and is sometimes confused over reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive surgery is used to correct congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, or the effects of disease like breast reduction, cleft palate surgery and birthmark removal, whilst it isn't much associated with necessary reconstruction. It's more about improving looks for aesthetic purposes such as rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and liposuction.

The Pros and Cons of Getting Cosmetic Surgery

While many cosmetic surgeries are done to correct a disfigurement due to an accident or birth defect the majority of the cosmetic surgery procedures done today are purely for aesthetic reasons.

Many Hollywood stars resort to plastic surgery to maintain their youthful appearance so they can keep working and to some degree this "look good at all costs" mindset has trickled down to the masses to the point where some teens want cosmetic surgery as birthday or Christmas presents.

The one thing that is often overlooked by many people though is that no matter if you're getting a facelift or tummy tuck plastic surgery is a medical procedure and there are risks involved that should be seriously considered before going under the knife.

Pros of Cosmetic Surgery

If you have been a victim of an accident or were born with a birth defect such as a cleft palate cosmetic surgery can be a blessing in that it can restore your appearance to what it was or should have been.

Today's skilled surgeons can do many things not possible even several years ago from eliminating ugly scar tissue to literally rebuilding a person's face and there are technological advances every day that allow for even more complicated procedures that can potentially help people who before had no options available to them.

Speaking with AP over a telephonic interview, Ashlee was evasive about her nose job. When asked about the surgery speculation Ashlee giggled and said, “Everybody’s already saying it, so I just don’t talk about it. I am like, OK, whatever. It doesn’t bother me. When pressed for a more definitive answer if she had nose job, the 21 year old giggled some more and said, “Maybe who knows!”

Surprisingly, three days later FDA finally approved silicone.

Thai's Khun Sumanee Guna-Kasem Epic Plastic Surgery

Brace yourselves boys and girls, because this next plastic surgery "creature feature" is a whole new breed of extreme makeover...

Her name is Khun Sumanee Guna-Kasem, and shes a well known thai socialite, who clearly has a troubling obsession with cosmetic surgery, to say the least!

There is no clear evidence of her actual age, and at this point its almost impossible to make an educated guess, considering the complete Ronald McDonald transformation shes undergone.

Judging from these photos, her list of plastic surgery procedures are presumed to include cheek implants, lip implants, facelift, nose job (rhinoplasty), eye lift (blepharoplasty), facial fillers and botox injections.

Now I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, Khun Sumanee Guna-Kasem probably went a little overboard with this whole plastic surgery thing. But hey, i bet she has a heart of gold... or maybe porcelain at this point.

Demi Moore Non-Surgical Facelift? Yay or Nay

Demi Moore is recognized by many of her peers and beloved fans as the epidemy of agelessness, and while many believe she is plastic surgery-free, at least one plastic surgeon suggests that the starlet may be investing upwards of $40,000 a year, to maintain her youthful good looks.

Its all in the April issue of Allure magazine, where one keen-eyed plastic surgeon gives us a rundown on a hefty list of nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, that Ms. Moore may or may not have undergone.

Topping the list is an estimated $24,000 for Veneers, $14,000 worth of filler injections under the eyes, in the cheek and around the mouth and nose to prevent wrinkles and fine lines. Also mentioned is approximately $8,000 worth of botox, which includes the typical injection sites, such as the forehead, brow, nose, around the eyes and neck area.

Now keep in mind, while this is educated speculation, it should be taken with a grain of salt, and may not reflect Demi Moore's actual age-defining regime. In fact, i can recall hearing or reading about Demi's fondness for traditional and alternative methods of staying young and healthy.

Housewives of Miami's Elsa Patton Plastic Surgery

Today's cosmetic tale comes from a rather obscure television personality, who is actually the mother of 'Real Housewives of Miami' cast member Marysol Patton.

Her name is Elsa Patton, and believe it or not she's a self-proclaimed witch, not to mention a daughter-described psychic who's pleasantly "quite funny".

And i must say, judging from her other-worldly appearance, she could easily be typecast as both a psychic and a witch, if she were to ever try her hand in the acting business.

But lets get back to the matter at hand, and by "hand" i mean "face"... And what exactly is going on with Ms. Elsa Patton's magical mug?

That seems to be the unanswered question making its way around the 'information super highway', unfortunately without any solid conclusions to date.

However, if we were to take a stab at solving Elsa Patton's "look", we'd estimate shes undergone more than a few plastic surgery procedures in her day. Including a nose job (rhinoplasty) operation, a brow lift and perhaps one too many lip and facial filler injections.

Muammar Gaddafi Plastic Surgery, Facelift, Hair Transplant

Ever since Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, came into our life via 24 hour news coverage, for his unwillingness to step-down from his 42 year reign of power over the people of Libya, many have questioned his worn-out 'aging rock star' appearance, and whether or not plastic surgery played a role in his peculiar Keith Richards-esque mug.

And apparently the answer is yes, according to Fabio Nakkash and Eliasir Ribeiro, a pair of Brazilian plastic surgeons who claim they preformed a facelift and hair transplant procedure for the vanity conscious Libyan dictator.

Alarabiya.net broke the story, and it details the proceedings of the two plastic surgeons who visited Mr. Gaddafi back in 1994.

Camille Grammer Before After Plastic Surgery, Implants, Botox

Camille Grammer is probably best recognized for starring on the hit television reality series, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, however she is also a model, actress, producer, and former arm-candy of Dr. Frasier Crane, AKA Kelsey Grammer.

Camille hasn't been shy while discussing her adventures with plastic surgery, fessing up to undergoing breast implants and receiving botox injections.

And while botox and implants are all Ms. Grammer is publicly admitting at the moment, many keen eyed onlookers strongly believe shes undergone a bit more cosmetic surgery.

The procedures in question include, lip injections, facial fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane and possibly upper eye surgery (blepharoplasty), which is unconfirmed but highly suspected.

So at this point we'll sit back and wait for either, A. Camille Grammer to make another cosmetic confession, or B. Kelsey Grammer writes a tell-all book on his 14 year marriage to Camille, perhaps expanding on some juicy plastic surgery habits.
